One of the best decisions I've ever made was to get rid of TV. I feel like I am free from a prison.
(I was reminded of this yesterday when a phone interviewer from a marketing research called me and asked if I remember this this or this commercial on TV and I said no to all of them)

I regularly answer questioneers sent by Suomen Gallup and what have you, and of all of them dealing with adverts/commercials, not one has started with the question "do you watch tv/do you have a tv". Ones about coffee, on the other hand, do bother asking whether the answerer drinks coffee or not.

Yeay for no tv! But I'm off to rent a film now... (still sick & at home)

Indeed! And I like to watch DVD's too but even with them I notice how easily I get addicted.

TV can be such a time thief.

Yes indeed and I always feel sad when old people & children (everyone else as well but these two groups make me sad) seem to do nothing much but watch TV. It's like TV was the life they are living. My parents are just watching TV all the time.

Me too.

It's kind of frightening how my mother (who used to hate TV) now gets angry with me if I phone her in middle of some show. She is constantly watching TV. Although now that she didn't get the kind of digibox you can record multiple channels at the same time, she has cut down a bit.

Yes, I also can sense it if I call to my parents when they are watching a certain show because they seem restless & unfocused. :(

I don't seem to have problems with TV robbing my time - in fact, I have a hard time finding TV shows that I would like to follow. At the moment, there are none.

However, computers and the Internet are the ones that steal my time...

I've grown up in a TV culture. When I was a child I was so proud when my parents got a colour Tv while everyone else still had black & white.. And TV programs have affected on my childhood a lot. When I moved away from my parents place they gave me a TV to keep me company and I kept it open day & night. When I lived in Vantaa I used to have TV on all evenings but at least I was doing creative crafts while I was watching at TV. When I moved to Espoo I just stopped. I didn't even bother to search all of the (Finnish) chanels and I opened the TV maybe twice a yer.. so I decided to give it away.

I get very easily addicted on Tv shows. I would watch all and now that I don't watch something every day I feel I actually have a life and I much prefer to live it.

I love films and we watch some shows on DVD but even then I start to notice some signs of addiction which does not feel so good.

Internet is the same and I'm thinking about spending less time in front of the computer but at least here I can communicate with friends, not just passively watch other people's (fictional) lives to escape mine.

Actually the only things I do in internet are blogs & swap groups & e-mails and they are all about communication & expressing myself in artistic ways (decos, artworks, writing)

Sometimes I think I should do the same thing to my computer.. it's a sword with two blades.

I'm glad that I can own a television without watching it all the time - sometimes I watch some tv films or documentaries but mostly I just use it when I want to watch my own DVD films.

Yes, I've been thinking about computerless life as well. Maybe it will happen.. but I'm not leaving entirely yet. I've decided to check LJ & groups mostly at work and spend my free time doing other stuff.

And I love films and we watch them on computer quite often actually. So I don't mean it's all bullshit & crap.. I just feel a bit awful about my parents & other people who seem to spend more time watching TV than living their lives.. (It feels weird to go home when one of the biggest topics for conversation is TV)

I haven't had TV for 3 years now and did not watch it much for at least 2 years before that but when I was younger I was addicted to TV.

I really encourage people to do it! ;)

I do have a tv, but I don't care for it much - internet, on the contrary, is an absolute necessity ;-) These days I only watch French tv shows during my lunch break, it's a nice way to relax in between work and at the same time do something for me French. Oh, and of course I have all those DVDs that I watch (going to the movies here is expensive and then they only show the big Hollywood blockbusters I'm not interested in).

Yes, I like to have internet as well. Even when I'll move to the countryside (some day) I think I'll have internet so i won't be completely out of touch with the world.

Congrats! I've gotten rid of a tv twice in my life, and it was NOT easy. I would go to my parents' house when I just wanted to watch tv. I refuse to get cable or any tv channels for that matter because I know I would just waste hours and hours of time.
